The Challenge
- Onboarding lacked a clear flow for different user types (PRO vs. regular user).
- A design system was missing, causing inconsistency across screens and making collaboration with devs harder.
- After publishing, PROs weren’t sure what to do next, leading to low engagement.
- There was no self-promoting tool for the PROs.
- Homepage content and structure needed better hierarchy and clarity.
My Role
As the Product Designer Specialist, I worked on:
- Fixing onboarding confusion by introducing role-based separation
- Designing a post-publish modal to guide users and increase feature discovery
- Introducing UI nudges like the “New” tag and confetti animation for delight
- Collaborating with the team to build a design system (ongoing)
- Optimizing homepage layout and visual hierarchy for better engagement
Research & Insights
Through internal reviews, user feedback, and product data, we uncovered:
- Many users were unsure of their role during onboarding
- PROs were dropping off right after publishing
- Promotions tab was not getting enough attention, even from active users
Key Design Solutions
1. Onboarding Role Selection Modal
Introduced a modal that lets users choose: “Join as PRO” or “Continue as User” at the beginning. This helped clarify expectations and tailored the journey accordingly.
2. Post-Publish Modal
Title: “Your profile is live. Let’s make it famous.” Encouraged PROs to explore the Promotions tab.
- Added “Show me how” CTA
- Included a confetti animation for celebration
- Linked to their live profile in a new tab
3. Visual Nudge on Promotions Tab
A subtle “New” label was added to draw attention to the Promotions tab in the dashboard, increasing visibility without being intrusive.
4. Homepage Improvements
- Revised layout for better content hierarchy
- Optimized visual clarity and readability
- Improved responsiveness and structure
5. Design System (Ongoing)
Started building a concrete design system with:
- Tokens, spacing, color, and typography styles
- Reusable components
- Clear documentation for handoff
Impact
- Onboarding confusion significantly reduced. Early feedback showed fewer support queries.
- Post-publish modal had a high engagement rate (CTA click-through around 78% ).
- "New" tab increased discovery of the Promotions feature.
- Visual consistency across homepage and dashboard improved.
What I Learned
- Small nudges like confetti or tags can change user behavior more than you think
- Communication between design and devs improves drastically with systems in place
- Role-based flows early in onboarding help avoid downstream confusion
Future Goals
- Complete and scale the design system across the entire platform
- Introduce user testing to validate design decisions
- Add micro-interactions and motion to enhance usability
- Optimize mobile experience for on-the-go PROs
- Improve onboarding conversion rates with data-driven refinements
- Build better documentation and accessibility standards
Final Thought
My work at Sprect has been a blend of structure and delight, from cleaning up the messy middle of onboarding to adding moments of joy in post-publish experiences. With both design and engineering in my toolkit, I strive to build products that feel as good as they function.
